About JB the character:
The Story of JB has many different versions depending who you ask, but the most often told version is that JB, born in the late 1800’s to an Irish mother and a father that traveled the world as a very successful “salesman”, grew up learning some of his father’s “tricks of the trade”. After years of working on the road and leaving JB and his mother to fend for themselves, JB’s father found a new life and decided never to return, leaving JB’s mother “seemingly” penniless. Later it was discovered that, being the clever & resourceful woman that she was, JB’s mother had stocked away most of what his father sent home and had created a small fortune. Once news of her wealth spread, JB’s mother quickly remarried a dashing young man 10 years her junior. The couple went on to have 2 gorgeous children together. JB’s half siblings made fun of his peculiarity, but that never stopped JB from becoming one of the most likeable, fun-loving tricksters that ever was. So JB took to the road developing the traits he learned from his parents and began to “Bamboozle” the world. The fact that JB was extremely charismatic and likeable made his job easy. Even after folks realized they had been taken, they were so impressed that they couldn’t be mad! JB’s colorful life created him great wealth. Eventually, JB decided it was time to settle down, and change his ways. JB spent the rest of his years giving back any way he could.
He was last seen in Dearborn, Michigan where rumor has it; he bought this building on Michigan Ave. and lined the walls with some of his fortune and gave the rest away. Some say the gold coming through the paint is his fortune revealing itself through weathered time and the money that continues to get “Bamboozled” from the customers hang proudly on the walls. We believe that JB’s spirit is still here where his laughter, giving and fun continues to live on.
About The real “characters” behind JB:
The two real life “characters” behind JB Bamboozle, Vince Spica and Bill Farwell, have had quite a full and colorful life as well. Many believe that JB is the alter ego of the two combined. When you combine the two men who have been friends as well as business partners for most of their lives, you get some of the craziest “real life” stories and the creation of many successful businesses where “bamboozling” is just part of the everyday fun!
Their first endeavor “Farwell & Friends” of Westland started in 1979 was very successful and led to the purchase of JB Bamboozles in Dearborn back in 1992. It’s success led to two more Bamboozles locations in Warren and Farmington Hills. After many years in the bar/restaurant business, the two decided to take a much-deserved break and try other ventures, so they sold all their restaurants to close friends who eventually changed the names and made them their own. But much like “bamboozling” is in JB’s blood, the restaurant business seems to be in theirs, because Bill Farwell, being the “workhorse” that he is commonly referred to, couldn’t get used to the “free time” on his hands, so they went on to purchase the “Penn Grill” in Plymouth, Michigan, where you can still find Bill Farwell still hard at work nearly every day. You could say that it may be destiny, because 3 years later, on June 1, 2011, Vince found himself back at the helm of the reclaimed Bamboozles, Dearborn. Because of the many changes “Bamboozles” experienced during all those years, it was time for JB to be resurrected and recreated. The newly re-opened Bamboozles is now called “JB Bamboozles Pub & Grille” and has a whole new, relaxed feel and attitude.
